About Mike
Mike was swimming in debt. He worked his way out by researching his options and building a plan, and then built American Debt Guide to share that process with anyone in the same spot.
Why this site exists
Getting out of debt took Mike research and a plan. This site puts both in one place: the Debt Audit shows where you stand and how long a plan would take, and the guides explain each way out, so the next person has a head start.
What Mike does, and doesn’t, claim to be
- What he does: designs and builds the site’s tools, writes and reviews its content, and explains how the Debt Audit’s math and rules work.
- What he isn’t: a financial advisor, certified financial planner, credit counselor or attorney. Nothing on the site is individual financial or legal advice.
How content is researched and reviewed
- Rules, figures and legal points are checked against primary and official sources, such as the CFPB, FTC, Federal Reserve, IRS, federal courts and the U.S. Code. Each page lists its sources.
- Where a threshold or assumption is the site’s own judgment rather than an official figure, the page says so.
- Every formula and threshold the Debt Audit uses is published on How the audit works.
- Every page is reviewed monthly, and sooner when a rule it describes changes.
The full editorial policy, including how pages are written and how the site is funded, is on the About page.
